Board sources were also quoted by PTI as saying that BCCI will back ICC’s bid for cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympics after some clarifications from IOC.
It had previously been reported by PTI that the Adani Group and Sanjeev Goenka’s RPG (owners of the Rising Pune Supergiants) had shown interest in owning new IPL teams and Ahmedabad was highly likely to get a new IPL franchise.
Among other decisions, veteran Congress leader Rajiv Shukla has officially anointed BCCI vice president in place of Mahim Verma from Uttarakhand.
PTI also reported that the BCCI general body decided in favor of Sourav Ganguly continuing as a director in the ICC Board. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah will be the alternate director as well as India’s representative at the Chief Executive Committee meets of the global body, the report added.
The BCCI has also decided that if it does not get full tax exemption from the government of India to host the World T20 next year, as sought by the ICC, then it would agree to a deduction from its annual revenue of USD 390 million from the global body. “We have told the ICC that we will approach our government for tax rebate but if we don’t get that exemption, the amount, which is around USD 123 million, will be deducted from our annual revenue, so we will get around USD 267 million. But India is hosting the 2021 T20 World Cup,” the source told PTI.
The key topics on BCCI AGM Agenda were the election of BCCI Vice President, the election of 2 representatives of general body in IPL Governing Council, adoption of BCCI Annual Budget FY 20-21, adoption of Ombudsman and Ethics Officer, adoption of Cricket Committees and Standing Committees as mentioned in Rules 26 and 25 (Constitution) respectively, the appointment of Umpires Committee in Rule 27, the appointment of representative or representatives in ICC and or similar committees, approval of two new teams to IPL 2022, discussion on BCCI’s stand on the inclusion of cricket in Los Angeles Olympic Games in 2028, to update ICC matters, to update on NCA matters, to update on ICC T20 World Cup 2021 to be held in India, and to update on India’s FTP Program.
IPL Big Update: BCCI AGM approves 2 more teams, IPL 2022 will now be 10 team league
IPL 2022 to have 10 teams, BCCI approves addition of 2 more teams for IPL 15 – BCCI AGM approves 2 more teams, IPL 2022 will now be 10 team league: As expected BCCI has approved two new IPL teams but only from IPL 2022, while the 14th edition of IPL i.e IPL 2021 will be played only with 8 teams. The decision was taken during the BCCI 89th Annual General Meeting (AGM) today in Ahmedabad.
“Two new teams will be introduced in the 2022 IPL,” a Board source told PTI.
Notably, InsideSport in its report on December 19 had pointed out that BCCI was a divided house on the feasibility of new teams for IPL 2021.
According to one of the BCCI official InsideSport spoke to, ‘time is too short for the introduction of the new teams for IPL in 2021. Tendering, players auction and most importantly getting all the stakeholders on the same page will be challenging in the short-time span. We are of the view, any addition to the team should only happen for IPL 2022.″
Another old BCCI functionary was also not comfortable with the idea of new IPL teams before 2022, “Our broadcast rights deal with Star will end by IPL 2021. After the end of the cycle, we should introduce new teams so that the broadcast rights and other commercial partnership values can be increased. The final decision now will be taken in AGM only and according to me the plan to increase teams will be shelved this year’.
“Ten teams will mean 94 matches in the home and away format. That implies a bigger window for the tournament, which may be tough given the current situation”, said another BCCI official.
IPL 2022 New Teams: When will be the tenders released?
According to the information available with InsideSport, tenders for the new teams will be released either in April or May 2021.
IPL 2022: Adani and Goenka will be in the fray for the new IPL teams
According to reports doing the rounds, Adani Group owned by Gautam Adani and RPSG owned by Sanjeev Goenka will be the biggest contenders for the 9th IPL team. Adani’s in past have openly declared their interest in owning the IPL team. With Ahmedabad now boasting of the biggest cricket stadium in the country, their interest will grow manifolds.
On the other hand, Goenka had owned the IPL team in the past as an owner of Rising Pune Supergiants for two years and will surely throw their hat in the ring when BCCI comes out with tender.
BCCI AGM: BCCI Approves 10-Team IPL From 2022 Edition
The BCCI general body has approved a 10-team IPL from the year 2022. The decision has been taken in BCCI's 89th Annual General Meeting (AGM), chaired by BCCI President Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah today in Ahmedabad. So far 8 teams have been playing in the IPL. Ten teams will reportedly play 94 matches in IPL 2022 for which about two and a half months will be required, this can make the international cricket calendar a bit chaotic.
Along with this, another challenge BCCI face is to ensure the availability of top foreign players for the entire duration of IPL. The broadcast amount for 60 matches per year is something that needs to be renegotiated. Currently, Star India pays Rs 16,347.50 crore for the period between 2018-2022 and it is for 60 matches per year/edition.
After BCCI was able to successfully host and conclude the IPL 2020, overcoming challenges owing to Covid-19, it was speculated that the annual cricketing extravaganza will have more teams from the next editions. The discussion was always around with regards to the likely potential owners of the teams or the overall format of the tournament or the schedule management.
The only time that IPL hosted a 10-team tournament was back in the year 2011. Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers were the teams that played along with 8 other franchises. Kochi Tuskers were terminated after the lone season in 2011 and Pune Warriors played until 2013.
It was always understood that the 10-team format in IPL will not come to immediate fruition as the tournament is due in the next four months. "At this point, the 10-team IPL, if BCCI intends to conduct it in 2021, will be a hurried one given that the tendering process and a mega auction will be difficult to organize in such a short period," a BCCI official had told news agency PTI.
